Presented by Gary Tinterow, director, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
The past decade at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has been one of unparalleled collection growth, with particular emphasis on contemporary art. As the MFAH board of trustees and staff prepare to conceive a new building dedicated to art after 1900, the question of how a museum should collect and present contemporary art remains a primary consideration.
Gary Tinterow, director of the MFAH, reflects on his recent experience as chairman of the department of modern and contemporary art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Drawing on his past engagement with a wide variety of artists—including Ai Weiwei, Pablo Bronstein, Tara Donovan, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Tony Oursler, Neo Rauch, Tomás Saraceno, Katrin Sigurdardottir, Raqib Shaw, Doug and Mike Starn, and Kara Walker—he considers the Met's involvement with contemporary art in relation to the unique opportunities offered by the MFAH collection and the community in Houston.
A reception sponsored by the MFAH patron group contemporary@mfah follows the program.
