François (Deon Lotz, in an astounding performance) is a middle-aged Afrikaner leading a double life. Respected as a successful businessman with a doting wife and beautiful daughter, François travels outside the confines of his hometown to carry on regular clandestine relations with similar men. However, François’ life is turned upside down when he meets Christian, the handsome son of his best friend and colleague. A lifetime of carefully controlled behavior soon unravels as the unsuspecting Christian becomes the target of obsession for François, whose overwhelming emotions turn him into a walking time bomb. Oliver Hermanus’ second feature is both a tragic and disturbing portrait of a generation of Afrikaner men left behind in South Africa’s transition away from Apartheid, men both unable and unwilling to embrace their country’s newfound freedoms.
