Author Katherine Howe (The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane), who grew up in Houston, returns with her latest historical novel. The House of Velvet and Glass is set in 1915 Boston, where a grieving young woman searches for answers in the occult world of crystal balls and seances.

Still reeling from the deaths of her mother and sister on the Titanic, Sibyl Allston is living a life of quiet desperation with her taciturn father and scandal-plagued brother. Trapped in a world over which she has no control, Sibyl flees for solace to the parlor of a medium. But when her brother is kicked out of Harvard under mysterious circumstances, Sibyl turns to psychology professor Benton Derby for help, despite the tensions of their shared past.

This program is free and open to the public. A reception follows.
"The House of Velvet and Glass" is on sale at The MFAH Shop (713.639.7360).
