CORE Performance Company and artistic director Sue Schroeder present Monochrome in Black, White & Gray, a new dance inspired by the exhibition Picasso Black and White.

Pablo Picasso was no stranger to dance. Even in his earliest works, he depicted dancers both in rehearsal and on stage. From 1916, he worked closely with the Ballets Russes to design costumes and sets for five productions. He even married Olga Khokhlova, one of the dancers.

Just as Picasso’s drawings and paintings built upon an underlying compositional structure, so do his prints and sculpture. “An idea is a point of departure and no more," he observed. "As soon as you elaborate it, it becomes transformed by thought.” Likewise, dance begins from a core idea enriched by the interaction of movement and music, with performers acting individually and in concert. Questions?
