    Right now the Dora Maar house is empty, the garden trimmed, library back in order, kitchen cleaned, shutters closed. But in my memory I can still see Marie’s brightly painted silks hanging from the stairwell, or how Kathy turned the downstairs gallery into a giant pinhole camera. I can still hear Pola singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” . . .

    For the Dora Maar House salon in April, Ukrainian poet Natalka Bilotserkivets talked about “We’ll Not Die in Paris." This poem, sung by the rock group Dead Rooster, became the hymn of the post-Chernobyl generation of young Ukrainians that helped bring down the Soviet Union.

    Just before our last fellows of 2012 left, they got stuck in the elevator at the Dora Maar House. Some former Dora Maar fellows may just now be thinking, "hey that’s a good strategy to not have to leave." But the "pompiers" (firemen) were called . . .
