The Brown Foundation Fellows Program, based at the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, France, provides residencies of one to three months for midcareer professionals in the arts and humanities to concentrate on their fields of expertise.

For the Dora Maar House salon in April, Ukrainian poet Natalka Bilotserkivets talked about “We’ll Not Die in Paris." This poem, sung by the rock group Dead Rooster, became the hymn of the post-Chernobyl generation of young Ukrainians that helped bring down the Soviet Union.

Just before our last fellows of 2012 left, they got stuck in the elevator at the Dora Maar House. Some former Dora Maar fellows may just now be thinking, "hey that’s a good strategy to not have to leave."

One of our current residents at the Dora Maar House, Anne Vilsbøll is a Danish painter, author and curator. While at the Dora Maar House, Vilsbøll continues to work on her series of paintings “Les Doyennes and Les Doyens de Provence,” portraits of people between 80-100 years old. As she searches out, meets and talks with some of the oldest citizens of the village, she returns to Dora Maar full of awe and enthusiasm....

Once upon a time, in Provence, the best one could hope for was a peaceful death. An easy death was rare; violent, painful ways to die were many . . . thus La Mort de Saint Joseph (“The Happy Death of Saint Joseph”) became a favorite theme for Provençal painters.
