We were abuzz here at Rienzi on Saturday morning as about 20 applicants to the Rienzi docent program enjoyed a brief tour of Rienzi with some of our current docents; heard from Erika Arslan, our docent program manager; and had an opportunity to ask questions during the Docent Program Open House Coffee. We have a thriving docent program at Rienzi (23 of our original 38 docents are still active!), and we’re looking to add more voices and...

This morning, Rienzi was bustling with children during one of our Summer Storytime Tours. Today we had 14 children enjoying stories read by docents Joan Bynum and Isabelle Chain, and by staff member Leah Arlen. They read Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin by Lloyd Moss, This is London by M. Sasek, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, How Loud is a Lion? by Clare Beaton, The Napping House by Audrey Wood, and many other books. If you’re interested...

Brown Convention Center here in Houston, our staff was part of an On-Site Insight, titled This Old House: Engaging the 21st Century. On Monday,...

Selections came from Debussy, Schumann, Sondheim, and Mandel, among others.  What really struck me was how just feet away, Rienzi's Breakfast Room, is where Angelica Kauffman's Ariadne Abandoned by Theseus usually hangs. The painting depicts Ariadne on the island of Naxos, where her lover, the Greek hero Theseus, left her after he promised to marry her when she saved him from a labyrinth where...

The azaleas are in full bloom at Rienzi! Yesterday we headed outside for a mini photo shoot: check out the slideshow at right. There are many varieties of this flowering, yet shade-loving bush. At Rienzi, you can see Judge Solomon, Pink Ruffle, Pink Pearl, Dixie Beauty, Formosa, Daphne Salmon, President Clay, G.G. Gerbing, Fielder’s White, and Kate Arendall azaleas. They are native to Asia, Europe, and South America and have been cultivated for hundreds of years. In...
