In the 1980s, the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation undertook the formation of a collection of French paintings to add to its already existing collections of the Italian, British, Flemish, and Dutch schools.
According to the wishes of Mrs. Blaffer and to the guiding principles of the Foundation, the objective of this collection is to give the widest public a real sense of the evolution of French painting during this period and to show—by making sure that all the pictorial genres are illustrated—the important trends that have contributed to defining an autonomous French school worthy of rivaling those of Flanders and Italy. Consequently, the Foundation trustees sought to acquire, besides works by the most important artists, also those that are often very representative by less well-known artists.
